Pentland and Christy continue to the mission, and when she finally reaches it, she falls exhausted into bed. Christy is left with the knowledge that Bob was injured coming to pick her up in El Pano. McNeil comes and begins prepping for surgery, and his wife comes running in with an axe and drives it into the floor, and then ties a string around his wrist, illuminating the cove people’s deep-seated superstitions. They stop at the Spencer cabin to eat and are interrupted by people bringing Bob Allen in unconscious.
When she gets there, there is no one to meet her and she manages to follow the postman, Ben Pentland, the seven miles up the mountain to Cutter Gap. She goes by train from her privileged home in Ashville, North Carolina to the depot in El Pano. Christy is compelled to go and talks to the mission workers and accepts a job teaching.
